My electronic parking brake failed. It would not release. I could start my car, put it in gear (drive or reverse) but it would not move. It definitely felt like the parking brake was still engaged and would not release.

I call my Hyundai Dealer (still under warranty) and a flatbed truck was sent out, free of charge :).

The flatbed truck driver had to forcibly drive my car (against the parking brake) up on to his truck.

Once at the Hyundai dealership and they had looked at my car, I was told that they have never heard of this type of problem; the electronic parking brake failing to disengage :( .

My car has now been at the dealership for 4 days. I was just told that they may have found the problem in an electrical modular, BUT... :eek: they would have to call Hyundai to make sure that it was the problem :confused: .

Has anyone experienced this problem or ever heard of this happening?

Okay, no replies or responses. Hopefully that a good thing and it tells me that this was an isolated incident.

Reading directly from my work invoice for repairs at the Hyundai dealer, it reads the following:

VERIFIED CUSTOMER CONCERN. VEHICLE TOWED IN AND EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE LOCKED AND UNABLE TO RELEASE.

ELECTRONIC ACTUATOR NOISY AND UNABLE TO MANUALLY RELEASE PARKING BRAKE.

SCANNED VIA GDS AND FOUND C1270 C1642 AND C2402 ACTIVE. TECH LINE CASE 6127421. NOTED ALL CODES TO EPB MODULE AND MODULE INTERNAL FAILURE. NOTED BUZZING FROM MODULE PRESENT EVEN WHEN NOT OPERATING.

WORKING PERFORMED.
Installed 59700-3M900 :pARKING BRAKE ASSY-ELECTR59 Qty: 1
PARTIALLY REMOVED REAR SUSPENSION TO ACCESS EPB MODULE. REMOVED AND REPLACED EPB MODULE AND REINSTALLED COMPENENTS. CLEARED SYSTEM VIA GDS AND TESTED VEHICLE. ALL OK AND WORKING.

After talking with the service manager at the Hyundai dealer, I may have been using my EPB {Electronic Parking Brake} the wrong way.

As with all my previous cars, because I live in an area with hills and a sloping driveway, I would always apply my emergency brakes to prevent pre-mature failure to my transmission.

Method of applying parking brakes: while keeping my foot on the brake pedal, I would put my transmission in neutral. Once this was done, I would apply the parking brake (depending on the car, either with the foot pedal or hand lever). After the parking brake was applied, I would take my foot off of the brake pedal to assure me that my car was resting of the parking brakes and not the transmission.

With the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), the service manager told me to stop the car, keep my foot on the brake pedal, move the shifter to the park (P) position and than push the EPB button. He said that the EPB was only to assist with the transmission and not designed to hold the car in a fixed position (even on a hill) if it was applied before putting your car in park. It would not hold your car in position at all in for some reason you left your car in neutral (it would roll).

I have never heard of that, especially with the mechanical (cable) parking brake.

Hopefully this does not happen again or to anyone else.

Yep - my Genesis is in the dealer for the exact same issue. I was dumb and didn't get the extended warranty. Now it's going to cost me over $2k to fix this. I'm not happy.

EPB Failure - 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 Ultimate

Too late. Just happened to me. I use it the exact same way because I live on a hill.
Same thing happened to me on 11/5/2015 but not using the parking brake in an irregular fashion. Here are the details if interested:

Stopped the car, put transmission in park, set parking brake, turned off car, exited car. Came back 5 minutes later, started car, removed emergency parking brake, put transmission in reverse and car would not move. "EPB" error light illuminated (amber color) followed by "AUTO HOLD" light (amber color). Car would not go forward or backward - clear sensation that parking brake was on and rear brakes were locked.

Tried the following: Multiple and repeated attempts at releasing the brake by pressing and pulling the parking brake switch; pulling the fuses for the EPB modules (under the hood) and the EPB switch module assembly (left knee fuse panel in car); switching interior fuse panel from on to off to on; removing battery connection and allowing car to reset; putting in reverse and forcing the brake to release (as in normal release mode). Nothing worked.

Called Hyundai Roadside. They were very nice and arranged for flatbed tow. Driver arrived and said I would better off waiting until morning to see if dealer had solution because he would have to DRAG the car onto tow trailer. Next day, dealer had no solutions. So, tow truck PULLED my $57K bullitt-train onto flatbed :eek:and dropped off at dealer.

Next day (today), service manager checks car and confirms stuck EPB (parking brake). Gives key to tech who gets in car, presses EPB button, and voila - BRAKE DISENGAGES! Currently in research phase.

FYI - I have previously owned a 2010 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 Tech for full 5 years without incident. I know how GENESIS' function and this is not comforting. Have never used the parking brake in an irregular fashion; regular user of the AUTO-HOLD. This is clearly an electrical problem or intermittent mechanical. I must say that it is strange that there is no way to release the parking brake in these situations. If it happens to you, you will be stranded wherever you are!

Called Hyundai HQ and offered this information. Super nice and they opened a case file. I will follow-up with more details and resolution. Hope this helps someone and thanks to OP.:)

Hi yes yesterday our handbrake did the same thing, we had to have it trucked back to dealer, when we bought it we were told if under warranty we had any trouble anywhere,and it needed to be repaired we would be given a loan car, well that's not true, we were told today no loan cars available, I have doctors appointment tomorrow 30klm away and we are stuck( no public transport), not happy with the company at all. what happened your car, I just had it serviced on the Wednesday 30,000km. not happy at all. also I find that the radio in this $50,000+ car is shit, I don't think I would by another on, always had X trails and never had any trouble had 3 of them , only reason I changed was I wanted Diesel and x trail don't make them or in the pathfinders anymore,

Gathering ino on the brand. Seems like electrical issues are not uncommon.

First post here and I plan to buy a 2015 Gen (Hyundai) AWD this week.

My Pacifica van has an auto park brake feature which is great.
Put it in park, the EPB applies itself. Put it in R or D and it auto releases (as long as the seatbelt is on).
It applies the EPB after it is in park just as the mechanic has suggested.

I always apply my S60 EPB after it is in park while my foot is on the brake, it just seems intuitive to do it that way.

When my Pacifica battery died, I went through the process of releasing the EPB without power and it did not work.

The mechanic also towed it up the flatbed with the EPB on and bounced it down to unload it. Fortunately I knew the process to mechanically get it from Park to Neutral without power because the Einstein tow man said "I'll just tow it up in Park and if it damages anything, Chrysler will have to take care of it". I can't make that up.

Extended Worry Free Warranty 10 years or 100,000 miles, platinum coverage, extremely worth it. Only $50 or $100 deductible for each major fix. Yes this just happened 6/01/2019 to me, Hyundai Santa Fe 2014. Park brake stuck on and car stuck in public car park. Had to be dragged onto flat bed tow truck 😳. Currently been at Hyundai dealer for a week to finally be told it needs a new part that will cost $4000. Car 9 mths out of warranty. Dealership putting in claim, fingers crossed Hyundai do the right thing. Any advice welcome.

Hi just wondering how you went with your park brake? I have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel Highlander. Driving fine. The other day could not get car to go. Lights for Auto HOld etc on. Was towed to Hyundai Dealer and now been advised it is the park brake motor and going to cost $4500 to fix it. Did you end up getting the car fixed? Thanks Tammy

Your car has an EPB button?.. What year Genesis were you referring to? I'm trying all methods before trying to get it repaired... and getting upset. The warranty should cover something like this.... disabling of an ENTIRE CAR?

UPDATE US what happened? I Live on an incline.. my car is stuck afraid to tow it to the dealer and have them tell me it's not covered under some sort of warranty or recall

Did you have solution for EPB Failure.

Currently I have the same issue, my electronic parking brake failing to disengage.

Hi Zoe, I have a 2015 Santa Fe Highlander and this just happened to me yesterday, I'm also in Australia. How did you go with the claim? What was the issue? $4,000 .... :(

This same problem just occurred with our 2015 Santa Fe Highlander in Australia. Over $3000 to fix, with a few hundred of the parts of backorder with no ETA into the country. Our mechanic physically disconnected the park brake so we can drive it home, but because the car still thinks its on its beeping like crazy.

Anyone been able to fix this?
