Lower the car versus after market rims - which one first?

I am very seriously considering getting aftermarket rims for my Genesis sedan in the very near future. My car is the stock height and would have a larger rim on it, possibly an 18" or 19" rim. Would it look funny not to lower the car first and get rims or should I be alright?

From experience, it just seems logical to lower the car first so you know how it sits and then go for the aftermarket rims. If you do it the other way around and buy the rims first and then lower the car, you won't know how low the car will sit and you could end up having to roll your fenders (which costs $$$).

Another thing to consider is whether you'll be lowering your Genesis on springs or coilovers. With the coilovers, you can adjust the ride height, so you can either get the rims or coilovers first - it doesn't really matter. With springs, you're fixed to a specific ride height - the springs will tell you how much of a drop you'll get in the front and rear.

I would talk to the tire place where you're getting the aftermarket rims and see what the largest rim size they recommend is. This will save you from other problems like fender rolling and tire rubbing in the future.

Also, if you're lowering on springs, be sure to replace your stock struts as they were not meant for lowering springs - I learned that the hard way and blew my front struts completely... not fun at all.

Agreed with the lower the car option. You really do not want to pay a ton of money for rims and then have some issues when you go to lower the car.

BTW, how much are you thinking of lowering your car?

I have seen a couple of these with rims and no lowering kit. The gap between the tire and fender seems to be ok if you go up an inch or two in rim size. I plan on rimming up the car for sure, no lowering though as I like the ride quality very much.

Rims first make a much bigger impression over lowering the car. Some places its just not practical to lower the car either. My vote went to rims first

If it is a sedan I say go with the rims first. If you get a nice sized 19" or 20" rim you probably will find you do not even have to lower the car.

Definitely rims first. If you do suspension first then you need to worry if you have issues when you get the rims after. But if you get the rims first then it will be a lot easier to avoid issues with the suspension if you have the rims already installed.

Rims. I don't plan on affecting the ride quality by lowering.

I think the sedan would look kinda dorky if lowered enough to notice.

I would go with the rims first, Car crazy is right. You really dont want to be worrying about not fitting the rims you want after you just lowered the car.

Personally I'd do both at the same time. Save up enough to be able to do both at the same time. That way I can avoid any problems.
